Ear Wax Removal FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Microsuction

What is microsuction?
Microsuction removes ear wax using a small suction tube while I carefully view your ear canal under magnification. It does not use water.

What is manual ear wax removal?
Manual removal, also called instrumentation, uses specialist tools such as small hooks or forceps to carefully remove wax under magnification. It does not use water or suction noise. I will discuss which method is suitable for you.

Does ear wax removal hurt?
Wax removal is usually comfortable, although some people experience discomfort. Microsuction can sound loud. Please tell me if you feel uncomfortable so I can pause or stop treatment.

Do I need to soften my wax before my appointment?
I recommend using olive oil ear drops or spray for 3 days before your appointment, following the product instructions.
Do not use drops if you have a perforated eardrum. If you have grommets, previous ear surgery, pain or discharge, please contact me before using drops.

What happens at my appointment?
I will discuss your symptoms and medical history, examine your ears and explain my findings. If wax is present and removal is appropriate, I can usually offer treatment during the same appointment.

What if there is no wax?
I will explain my findings and offer advice on your ear health, including whether further assessment or referral may be needed.

Do you see children?
Yes. I offer ear care for children aged 3 and over. I take time to explain each step and work at your child’s pace. Wax removal depends on their ear health and ability to remain still safely.
I also offer a children’s ear check, hearing test and report.

Can you help if I am nervous or sensitive to noise?
Yes. Please let me know when booking. I can explain the procedure, allow breaks and discuss whether quieter manual removal may be suitable.

Are there any risks?
As with any clinical procedure, wax removal carries some risks. These include discomfort, ear canal irritation or minor bleeding, temporary dizziness, tinnitus or changes in hearing. Injury to the eardrum is also possible. I will explain the risks before asking for your consent.

What if all the wax cannot be removed?
Complete removal cannot always be achieved in one appointment. I may stop if treatment becomes uncomfortable or unsafe. I will explain the next steps, which may include further softening, another appointment or referral.

Can I have treatment if I have tinnitus or previous ear surgery?
Please tell me about tinnitus, perforations, grommets or previous ear surgery when booking. I will assess your ears and discuss whether treatment is suitable and which approach may be appropriate.

What if I need to cancel or rearrange?
Please give at least 4 hours’ notice. If you have difficulty attending, please call 07309 081374 as soon as possible.

What if my hearing suddenly changes?
Sudden hearing loss needs urgent medical assessment. Ask for an urgent GP appointment or contact NHS 111. Please do not wait for a routine wax removal appointment.

How can I contact you?
